The reviews were, the price was a little expensive compared to the competition, good form factor - small and unobtrusive, and the specs indicated it would do all I needed it to do. (Come on Apple!! What did omitting the internal modem save you - $0.10?!)Īfter doing my research, I discovered the Zoom 3095. As 'old school' as it seems, faxing is still useful and, in some cases, required or preferred for transmitting legal or other other sensitive documents. I did not realize at the time that Apple had dispensed with the internal modem so, with the new Mac, I now had no fax capability. I just replaced my aged iMac G5 with a new iMac 21.5 running Lion. It seems to me that the technology of Dial-Up connections is being phased out, whether you & I like it or not. Eventually the US Robotics modem gets hot, and the connection gets dropped, and I just go back to my old Dinosaur MicroSoft computer. Most pages still load about halfway, then hang up. I replaced the Zoom modem with the US Robotics 5637 modem.

It seems that the technology of external USB modems is quite fragile - other reviewers have mentioned that they don't stand up well to thunderstorms. I'm guessing that the constant strain of trying to load pages for hours on end finally just burned the modem out.

The modem was working, but the OS just would not let it do it's job. In addition, I feel it is only fair to say that the new Mavericks OS is NOT very friendly to dial-up technology - the web pages would load about halfway, then Hang Up. The UGLY - the modem failed after about 5 days, and I sent it back for a refund. A call to their Tech Suppt cleared up the confusion - configuring the modem is actually quite simple once you throw away the instructions. The BAD - the setup instructions are very confusing. The GOOD - after initial set up, it DID work just fine for a few days. Bought this for my new Mac mini with OS X Mavericks.
